Indonesia Sumatra Gayo Anaerobic Natural
Molasses, Apricot, Raisin
We are happy to bring a fresh harvest of a direct trade offering from our partners at Adena Coffee, sourced from the Kenawat community in the Gayo Highlands of Aceh, Sumatra. This mountainous region, known for its lush agroforestry farms, produces coffees with a dense, silky body and refined sweetness—hallmark characteristics of Gayo’s unique terroir.
Sourced from the highlands of Kenawat, Aceh, Adena Coffee’s Sumatra Gayo Anaerobic Natural represents resilience, sustainability, and quality. The region, once devastated by decades of conflict and the 2004 tsunami, was long overlooked by specialty coffee buyers. However, through Adena’s efforts, coffee production has been revived—empowering local farmers and bringing Aceh’s exceptional coffees to the global stage.
Grown in agroforestry systems shaded by 2 to 5 different tree species, this coffee thrives in the region’s fertile volcanic soil at 1,200–1,500 meters. Farmers handpick ripe cherries, meticulously sort them, and sun-dry them on patios—a significant challenge in Sumatra’s humid climate. This anaerobic natural process enhances clarity and brightness, resulting in a spiced acidity with notes of molasses, apricot, and raisin.
