Brazil Serra Dos Ciganos

We are happy to bring a fresh harvest of a direct trade offering from our parter FAF coffees from the Serra dos Ciganos Community of Mogiana region of São Paulo state. The Mogiana region is composed of mountains and rolling hills that produce sweetness and a dense creamy body that are the principal characteristics of this region.

The Serra do Cigano Valley and wet mill sits in the mountains bordering the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Located in the municipality of Caconde, it is an important watershed contributing to the Rio Pardo river from the natural springs that rise on the Bobolink farms of Serra do Cigano Mountains. The name, which means the Gypsy Valley, arose in the 19th century when the valley was used as a camp for the travelling people of the area.

This coffee is rich, creamy and balanced, all packaged in a delightfully clean cup. Look for big notes of toffee, peanuts, caramel and rich chocolate fudge representing the best of quality from Mogiana region.

In 2008 the Serra do Cigano community started working with FAF Coffees on a new coffee production model for the region. Instead of selling their dried coffees to local buyers they chose to work with FAF Coffees to raise quality and think of coffee as a beverage, not as a commodity. Along with better control of the post-harvest processes and the application of new techniques, such as raised beds and careful turning, the full potential of their coffee could be revealed. In partnership with João Hamilton dos Santos, the head of the Serra dos Ciganos Community, FAF developed a wet mill to collectively process all coffees for the Bob-O-Link Project. The Serra dos Ciganos Center for Coffee Excellence built with the community by FAF  is a hub for the dissemination of information and workshops for the Community.
